Everyone wants a megawatt smile, but not everyone has the means to fork over hundreds of dollars for specialty whitening services. Even drugstore products designed for at-home tooth whitening can cost an upwards of $50, with no guarantee that these chemical-laden products will do what they claim. If you’d like to whiten your teeth without paying an arm and a leg for treatment, read on to discover a few at-home methods for polishing those pearly whites.
Brush your teeth with baking soda.
Baking soda’s mildly abrasive nature and natural whitening properties make it a great choice for at-home teeth whitening. When you apply baking soda to your teeth, you effectively remove surface stains, while also creating an alkaline mouth environment, which will prevent bacteria growth. To try it for yourself, mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 2 teaspoons of water and brush your teeth with the paste. You can do this a few times per week without damaging your teeth.
Use hydrogen peroxide.
Hydrogen peroxide is a natural bleaching agent that will also help to eliminate bacteria in your mouth. In fact, hydrogen peroxide is so effective, that it’s a common ingredient in many commercial teeth whitening products. Just be sure to watch how much hydrogen peroxide you use when cleaning your teeth. Strong concentrations or overuse can cause gum irritation and tooth sensitivity. Try using a 1.5% or 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash before you brush or combine it with baking soda to make a toothpaste. This DIY paste can be used a few times per week with minimal risk.
Stick to your oral hygiene routine.
You might be surprised to learn that keeping up with basic brushing and flossing habits will result in a brighter smile, but it’s true! Staying on top of this routine will prevent the build-up of plaque and surface stains – both of which can be hard to erase and contribute to the gradual yellowing of your teeth. No matter what’s going on in your day-to-day routine, remember to always floss and brush your teeth in the mornings and evenings. You can also use mouthwash to clean the entirety of your mouth and achieve that just-brushed feeling.
