Though Thanksgiving may seem like it was just yesterday, the winter holidays are just around the corner. That means that it’s already time once again to begin planning your Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa spread – a spread that likely includes cranberry sauce.
Easily found in the canned form at the grocery store, getting your hands on commercially made cranberry sauce isn’t the problem. Rather, it’s making canned cranberry sauce taste and look homemade that is more challenging. Luckily, you don’t have to resort to a fully homemade cranberry sauce recipe to jazz up the meats, cheeses, and other items on your table. Here is a simple, 3-step way to make your standard can of cranberry sauce or jelly taste homemade – no cranberry stewing and mashing required.
Heat it up.
Pick up any standard can of cranberry, and you might end up with a gelatinous, can-shaped blob of jelly. Though you may associate this type of cranberry sauce with the holiday dinners of your childhood, it’s easy to convert this solidified jelly to a sauce that’s easier to spread. Warm the canned jelly over medium heat, breaking it up with a spoon. Add water if needed to achieve a more fluid texture.
Cranberry sauce is good as-is. But, by adding a few extra ingredients to your sauce, you’ll be able to really amplify the flavor, while also adding visual interest. Before you serve your sauce, stir in one or more of the following ingredients:
• 2 tablespoons of orange juice plus 1 teaspoon of finely grated orange peel
• ½ can of mandarin oranges
• ½ cup pineapple
• ½ teaspoon cinnamon
• ½ cup chopped dried apricots
• ½ cup toasted pecans
Serve it beautifully.
Finally, make your cranberry sauce a statement-maker on your table by serving it in a beautiful dish or bowl. Select a deep-bottomed platter or shallow bowl to make it easy for everyone in your household to scoop out a serving (or two) of your newly upgraded cranberry sauce.
